What to Do If Your Car Key is Stuck in the Ignition Lock

Most people have no clue that their car key can get stuck in their ignition lock—until the frustrating situation occurs, often with no warning signs. Even if you’ve noticed your key sticking here and there in your ignition lock, you probably didn’t pay much attention, too busy with other concerns. Having your car key get stuck in your ignition lock can be frustrating enough to make you want to tear your hair out. You wonder how you’re going to resolve the situation and who to turn to so that the problem is fixed quickly without draining your wallet. We’ve compiled a list of tips to help you through this stressful situation.

A few words of caution before you proceed. First, ensure that your vehicle’s parking brake is set. This is to prevent your vehicle from moving if you do end up rapidly turning your key in the ignition lock while attempting to free it. It’s not worth it to have your car hit another if you’re in a parking lot, for example. Second, take a deep breath and keep calm. It’s natural for people to get anxious when faced with an unexpected locksmith emergency, but giving in to that tendency and allowing it to carry you into panic. This will not only cause you to become needlessly upset, but may encourage you to act in a manner that is not in your best interest. Instead, take a few deep breaths and center yourself before proceeding.

Is there an obstruction or damage to the lock?

Using a flashlight or the light from your phone, investigate the lock closely. You probably won’t be able to see much from the outside, but you may be able to identify if there’s any dirt or dust wedged inside the key. It’s important to keep your key clean and never use it for anything other than its intended purpose, or this can transfer grime to the interior of your lock cylinder. You can clean your lock cylinder of such obstructions using a can of compressed air. Never use a damaged key in the lock, as this can ruin the pins inside of the lock and necessitate an ignition lock replacement. If your key is stuck due to such an obstruction or damage, you probably won’t be able to free it without the help of a professional with the right tools.

Is your transmission actually in park?

Generally, most models of vehicles have numerous safety features you may not be aware of, including a measure that prevents you from removing your key from the ignition lock when the key is engaged. If your vehicle is older and your steering wheel is beginning to show signs of wear and tear, the setting for your ignition may actually become more touchy and you may need to ensure that your transmission is set exactly to park and not in between settings at all. Check to ensure that your transmission is actually in park. You may have to fiddle with the settings a little bit. This may be enough to free your key. If you do identify a problem with your ignition cylinder, such as signs of wear and tear, have them checked out by a locksmith or a mechanic as soon as possible to prevent a more serious issue.

Politicians Want to Put Combination Locks on Pill Bottles to Fight Opioid Epidemic

by

image from: themindunleashed.com
Two Tennessee legislators are proposing a new policy that would put combination locks on pill bottles. The lawmakers say that pill bottles containing opioids are too easy to open, thus making them easier to steal. It is likely, however, that opiate pills are sold voluntarily far more often than they are stolen.

The Pilfering Prevention Act, introduced by Senator Richard Briggs and Representative Matthew Hill, would make the new combination lock pill bottles mandatory in the state of Tennessee.

Senator Richard Briggs claims that citizens of his state are accidentally overdosing because they don’t know how powerful the drugs are:

"Too often well-meaning Tennesseans are completely unaware of the highly addictive, and potentially lethal, prescriptions drugs sitting in the family medicine cabinet. This is where drug addiction starts, and often where accidental overdoses occur..."

Why Panic Bars Are Crucial for Your Business

If you own or operate a business in the Tucker, Georgia region, then you should know about how important panic bars are to the safety of you, your staff members, and your customers, as well as anyone else on your property. Panic bars are a cost-effective, simple installation that a locksmith can perform for you at a low price. Our locksmith pros at Locksmith Tucker LLC have extensive experience outfitting local businesses with emergency exit hardware such as panic bars. We have a wide selection in stock of panic bars, alarm systems, emergency exit hardware to serve the needs of businesses all across this part of Georgia. Contact our locksmith

A Brief Explanation of Panic Bars
Panic bars (otherwise known as crash or push bars) are a common form of door exiting mechanism found on commercial buildings. They consist of a special type of spring-loaded lever that, when depressed, forces the door open. There are no knobs to turn or levers to manipulate. This can cut down on precious seconds for each person exiting the door, which may not seem like much at first, but adds up significantly if there are many occupants in the building. Panic bars are not only recommended for buildings with high occupancy rates, but may be mandatory depending on the fire code governing each specific building.
You probably use panic bars at least several times a week, but haven’t given them much thought. Panic bars are found most commonly on retail centers, restaurants, medical facilities, schools, and other buildings with a high occupancy, but may be found in commercial properties of all varieties. They are generally inexpensive and easy to install for a locksmith. Most people go through their whole lives using panic bars on a regular basis and never knowing what they’re called.

Panic bars have become widespread all across the world because they have been shown to save lives and prevent injuries in a crisis situation. Their affordable cost and easy installation makes them a valuable investment for almost any business that has more than 5-10 people on the premises at any given time. While most commercial properties of a certain square footage already have panic bars affixed to all of their exterior doors, it’s crucial to ensure that the panic bars you may already have installed are functioning properly.

The history of panic bars is one colored with tragedy. Panic bars were developed in response to a string of preventable disasters, the two most famous being the stampede at Victoria Hall and the fire at the Iroquois theater. In both situations, unsafe locking mechanisms on the doors along with other barriers resulted in massive casualties of the people inside that should have been preventable.
These tragedies, coupled with others of a similar nature, were integral in creating the first emergency exit door devices. Panic bolts were developed originally as a precursor to today’s panic bars, and featured a latch that opened the door when pressure was applied.

Keyless Entry Benefits

Thanks to technology, keyless entry has been popularized in the last several decades for vehicles. Now, keyless entry systems are even available for our homes and businesses. The benefits of these types of entry systems are numerous and can definitely serve to make life a lot easier. If you do not have keyless entry for your home, business, or especially your vehicle, upgrading can be a great way to simplify and even make life more efficient.

For Your Vehicle
Nearly all newer vehicles come with keyless entry keys. Automatic buttons on the key itself allow you to lock and unlock the doors right in the palm of your hand. You can even unlock your truck or set off the car alarm via some keyless entry keys.
Safety
One of the primary benefits of keyless entry for your vehicle is safety. If you are heading back to your vehicle, especially at night, standing alone trying to put your key in the slot can make you vulnerable to carjackers or other criminals. If you are simply able to push the button from a few feet away and unlock the doors, you do not run the risk of having a few extra seconds where you are looking down and distracted. With keyless entry, you do not even have to look at your key to unlock or lock the doors. This means that your eyes and head can be up, scanning the vicinity for any potential problems.
Convenience
We usually travel because we are going to and from necessary appointments or activities or because we are picking up groceries or other items. Having keyless entry means that when you are out and about taking care of your daily living activities, you can quickly get in and out of your car. Some families may make multiple trips in the car per day or drive to multiple locations. A keyless entry device makes it so you and your family can efficiently load the car with groceries, get in and out of the vehicle quickly, and save time.

For Your Home
In recent years, keyless entry has become increasingly popular for homeowners. Depending on your home and the size of your family, keyless entry may the best option compared to traditional locks.
Security
Increasing security is one of the greatest perks of residential keyless entry systems. Traditional deadbolt locks, for example, may not offer the heightened security some families may want. Keyless entry systems, depending on your budget, come with advantages that traditional locks cannot match. They are far more durable and able to withstand break-ins and other forms of tampering. You can also determine set lock and unlock schedules to accommodate those who may need to enter the home at a set time, such as after school.

Common Ignition Cylinder Problems and Solutions

An ignition cylinder, or ignition switch as it is sometimes referred to, is a small, but critical part of any vehicle. This small, cylindrical piece of hardware sits on the right side of a vehicle’s steering wheel and is the encasing to the slot where you insert your car key. An ignition cylinder must work properly in order for your vehicle to start. When you insert your key into the cylinder, if something is not working or properly in place, the vehicle will not receive power and the engine will not start. Even though an ignition cylinder is small, it can cause major problems. There are a few indicators that will clue in vehicle owners to a possible faulty ignition cylinder. Below you will find the most common symptoms of an ignition cylinder that is broken or in need of repair.

Your Vehicle Will Not Start
This is the most common indicator that your vehicle’s ignition cylinder needs to be replaced. Keep in mind that your vehicle’s ignition cylinder is used every single time you start and stop your vehicle. Over time, the ignition cylinder may wear out and not be able to properly turn anymore, thus causing the vehicle to not start.
Your car in this instance may also start but then stall. Again, this could be because the ignition cylinder has been worn down and is unable to hold the key in place. Stalling and then stopping usually indicates that the cylinder is worn and is slipping out of place, causing the key to loosen and stop the car.

Your Vehicle’s Electrical System Will Not Turn On
Usually with one turn of your car key in the cylinder, you can get the car’s electrical panels to light up without necessarily turning on the gas. If you have attempted to turn on your vehicle and are not even seeing the electrical panel light up, this could indicate that the cylinder should be replaced or repaired.

Your Key will Not Turn in the Cylinder or will Not Fit into the Cylinder
There is also the possibility that there is something jamming or blocking the entrance to the ignition cylinder. If you notice the key will not go in all the way or gets jammed in a certain way, it could be that there is something in the slot that is causing the issue. If you do notice that there is something blocking the cylinder slot or there is some other interference, do not try to pull it out. This could cause even more damage to your ignition cylinder and makes things worse or costlier in the end. Be sure you speak with a locksmith before attempting to do any sort of deeper investigation into your ignition cylinder in this case, or in the ones listed above. Ignition cylinders are meant to be tricky to get to for good reason. They are housed in the steering panel in order to deter thieves and make the car much more difficult to tamper with and steal. A professional locksmith will have the right tools necessary to repair your cylinder and will also have experience with various vehicle makes and models or types of ignition cylinders.
